A comprehensive review of the 40-year career of British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor
Anish Kapoor, a British artist of Indian origin, is renowned for his large-scale installations that explore the relationship between form and void, as well as the visible and the invisible. Many of his pieces encourage viewers to engage visually with spaces that appear to absorb light or distort perception, as can be seen in his famous 'black holes'. He achieves this by employing unconventional materials such as PVC skins, concave and convex mirrors, and carved stone.
This illustrated catalogue showcases a selection of Kapoor's works from the past 40 years. Included is a conversation between the artist and Marie Nipper, Director of the ARKEN Museum, which provides insight into Kapoor’s approach to the exhibition. It also contains three essays by Mari Hvattum and Pireeni Sundaralingam, as well as a collaborative piece by anthropologists Mikkel Bille and Tom Flohr Sørensen. Together, these essays examine Kapoor’s work from philosophical, physical and existential perspectives.
Born in 1954, Kapoor lives and works between London and Venice. Some of his public sculptures, such as Cloud Gate (2006), have been installed in urban spaces and are part of collections at institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London and Fondazione Prada in Milan.
